Why You Cannot Get Stretcher Certified Online Only

A driver completes the one hour online stretcher module, saves the completion screen, and sends it to the office. The office files it. Everyone assumes the requirement is met.

Then a broker requests the certificate, and there is not one.

This happens often enough to be worth addressing directly. The NEMTAC stretcher program is not an online course with an optional supplement. It is one program delivered in two required parts, and the certificate does not exist until both are complete.

What the online portion is

Part One is a one hour self paced online training course. It provides an overview and awareness of stretcher operation for the NEMT professional.

The course covers proper body mechanics, equipment overview, safe lifting and loading, general stretcher operations, and a hands on skills review. It is useful material and it establishes the vocabulary a driver needs before attending the second half. It is purchased from NEMTAC at education.nemtac.co/collections.

Awareness of safe lifting and demonstrated competence in safe lifting are different standards, and the program does not treat them as equivalent.

What Part Two adds

Part Two is a three hour in person hands on didactic course that reviews and reinforces the principles of the online course. Students work with experienced instructors as they review stretcher operations and how to safely transfer passengers onto or from the stretcher.

The objectives are written in performance terms. Participants understand proper body mechanics and how to apply them in daily work activities. They evaluate and choose the correct equipment required for safe passenger transport. They identify the necessary information required to safely transport passengers. They discuss and demonstrate safety precautions when lifting, moving, and carrying passengers. They demonstrate an understanding of safe lifting procedures for stretcher and gurney.

Demonstrate appears twice. That standard cannot be met through a screen.

Why the requirement will not change

Handling and moving passengers on a stretcher carries inherent risk to both passenger and provider, from potential mechanical failures or unsafe practices by the operator. Neither risk is addressed by video instruction.

Equipment familiarity comes from working with the equipment. Sound technique comes from an instructor observing and correcting form in real time. There is no substitute for either.

This matters most for the operators who need it most. A large share of the people seeking stretcher certification are not experienced stretcher crews brushing up. They are companies entering the service line for the first time, where nobody on staff has operated a stretcher before. For that group, an online overview is not close to sufficient preparation for a first trip.

The broader industry has been moving in the same direction across every training category. Payers and brokers have become considerably less willing to accept credentials with no practical component, and providers who built their compliance around online only certificates have encountered problems at renewal.

Stretcher training was ahead of that shift. The hands on requirement has always been part of the program.

Practical implications

Budget for both parts from the outset rather than treating the in person session as optional.

Do not assign a driver to stretcher routes on the strength of a completed online module. Until Part Two is finished and the certificate is issued, that driver is not certified.

Do not file a completion screen as a certificate. It is not what an auditor is requesting.

Identify your instructor before purchasing Part One. The online module is available on demand. Instructor availability is what determines your timeline.

Completing the hands on requirement

Purchasing the online portion takes a few minutes on the NEMTAC site. Locating an authorized instructor who can conduct hands on training with your team is the step that stalls most companies.
